California Business Groups Line Up in Support of Prop. 1

California Chamber of Commerce, California Business Roundtable & Business Groups Across State Agree: Building Affordable Housing Key to Thriving Economy

Sacramento – California’s leading business organizations, including the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Business Roundtable, are supporting Proposition 1, the Veterans and Affordable Housing Act, citing the need for public investment in affordable housing to not only help local and state economies and businesses but to also help provide the housing families, veterans and workers need to live and work in California.

Most recently, CalChamber said about its Prop 1 support: "The housing supply and demand imbalance in California is having significant negative impacts on the state economy and businesses. The housing shortage is estimated to cost California approximately $140 billion a year – the equivalent of 6% gross state product – and that does not include lost business opportunities or expansions forgone or relocations instituted by employers because they cannot recruit or keep workers in the state's high-cost housing environment. Prop 1 is projected to create more than 100,000 jobs associated with or indirectly related to the construction of new housing and inject billions of dollars back into the state’s economy.”

Business groups in support of Prop 1 include:

American Council of Engineering Companies of California
Asian Business Association, San Diego
Bay Area Council
Building Industry Association of Tulare/Kings Counties
Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation

Governor Jerry Brown and California’s Legislature put Prop 1 on the November ballot as part of a multi-pronged strategy in the 2017-18 State Budget to address the crisis faced by the many Californians who can’t afford the cost of housing, including veterans, families, seniors, survivors of domestic violence and others in need of a stable roof over their head. Prop 1 will boost the building of affordable homes and increase access to housing under a variety of successful housing programs, including the CalVets Home Loan Program.
